Town of Phelps and Ontario County Maps
"The Round Jug School," was located on McIvor Road in the town of Phelps, Ontario county, Another one, called "Round Cobblestone District 19 School," was once located at the top and west side of Whiskey Hill Road, replaced by a brick structure, now gone. Richard Palmer blog.
#19 Whiskey Hill District: The school house was located at the top of the hill just south of Gifford Rd on the west side of Pre Emption Rd (Co Rd #6). It no longer exists. Diane J Goodman, Administrative Assistant, Phelps Community Historical Society email 11/7/2019.
The stove was set in the center of the building as seen by the placement of chimney. They were called "stone-jug schools" because of their resemblance to a round jug with the chimney serving as the "cork". Handwritten correspondence from Clyde Maffis 7/20/1970, courtesy Cobblestone Museum.
Editor's Note: The 1859 Maps lists the structure as Schoolhouse No. 9.
